The State of Pennsylvania requires all owners of motor vehicles to have and maintain auto liability insurance or financial responsibility. The required minimum liability insurance of the state is $15,000 for injury or death of one person in an accident, $30,000 for injury or death of more than one person in an accident and $5,000 for damage to property of another person. Owners of vehicles who fail to maintain their insurance shall have their license suspended. Drivers who are caught driving without the required insurance shall have to pay the stiff fine and shall have his license suspended for three months. In order to reinstate his license he will have to pay the reinstatement fee. At the same time, the vehicle registration will also be suspended for the same duration of three months. Also, in order to reinstate the vehicle, the owner must also pay the reinstatement fee.
The state is strict about its auto insurance and all registered and license insurance companies in the state are required to report to the state’s Department of Transportation any lapses on the policy of their customers. The department will then notify the owner of the policy to provide them with the information about the new insurance. Failure to respond to the request shall result in driving privileges suspension.
